For one of our ongoing projects, we recently came into contact with Sunray Photo, an agency based in Switzerland (Ticino) with a rich collection of food, interiors and beauty&lifestyle images. Honestly, in days – when our screens are dominated by the white, blue or green of hospitals or the grey of press conferences -, doesn’t it feel like a bit of a holiday to be immersed in colourful green dishes or fabulous interiors? Given that we won’t be going very far from our screens this year, we are happy to have a look and find out more about the agency, by interviewing Gabriella Lobuono, its director.
Can you tell us why and how Sunray Photo started?
After a long-term experience as a syndication manager, the passion for Photography and for the Publishing Industry convinced us to start a brand new adventure, creating an Independent Syndication Photo Agency, in 2011.
What are Sunray Photo’s strengths?
With our team we often stress on the high quality and exclusiveness of our portfolio, and on our stories, ready-to-publish as a whole. Our main value, in my opinion, is our capability to understand the innermost requirements of any different clients, their style, their needs, in order to work side by side with them. Human relationship, I dare say, is the basis.
How do you select new projects and authors for your archive?
We choose originality, refinement, stunning images that well represent the Sunray Photo spirit in any category, whatever it is Beauty, or Food, or Deco….. And we prefer complete stories better than single images, always in the perspective of offering an immediate service to our clients. We have a great cooperation with International Publishing Houses: French style, for instance, is one of our peculiarities.
Has the general situation related to Covid-19 affected the images requested by clients in any way?
As a general rule, clients that often produced their images outdoors have encountered difficulties due to partial or total lockdown in any country. We have been happy to propose them especially outdoors stories, whatever it was a living food feature, or fashion not in studio, or stunning homes in bucolic environment.
We are at the end of the year, time of projections. What trends in beauty and food photography do you think will become more relevant next year?
I guess that “green” could be a great key in any fields. Attention to the environment and sustainability can easily start from the use of our beauty products, the re-discover of outdoors fitness and living, or the choice of our food.
What was your dream job as a kid? does your current work resemble the one you dreamed of?
I talked of human relationship, well I dreamt something like that, one can think that jobs like psychologist or teachers or medicine could fit but…. My experience shows that working WITH people FOR the people is a fantastic way of applying this dream. So, yes, Photo Agency perfectly resembles my dream.

Gabriella Lobuono Publishing Industry has been my first love. I have started working in a couple of the biggest Publishing Houses: first with texts and sources, and then soon I fell in love with photography. Contracts with photographers and editors was the next step, syndication manager the natural consequence. And finally, the birth of Sunray Photo, Independent Photo Agency in 2011 was the last challenge.
