We are very happy to start with Gallery Stock: London/New York based high-end picture library and a big player in the stock images market. We have interviewed Lee Coventry-Walsh, Creative Director of Gallery Stock UK headquarter. Please go and check YP hosting Gallery Stock’s images on the brand new homepage or fully enjoy the library here: www.gallerystock.com
When and how did Gallery Stock start?
Gallery Stock was founded in 2006 in New York. Howard Bernstein. saw an opportunity in the market to license work by photographers being commissioned to shoot for high-profile campaigns and brands. This was a natural progression as his agency, Bernstein and Andriulli, was representing some of Advertising’s best photographers.
How many images do you have in your library right now?
Just shy of 600,000 and growing.
What was the biggest challenge you had to master to become what you are today?
Gallery Stock came into the market to fill a niche; high-end, exclusive imagery which couldn’t be found elsewhere, shot by photographers who were not traditionally associated with ‘stock’. One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced is remaining true to these values while scaling the company to remain competitive. Over the last 5 years the demand for volume has skyrocketed, and the need for flexibility to publish across platforms and geographies has meant that RF imagery is often the default option for customers. Staying true to those founding principles while adapting to market forces is the key to our success.
What is a definitive YES (or NO) when selecting a photographer?
Let’s keep it positive and focus on the YES! Fundamentally, we look for artists whose work is commercially relevant, that is, they’re working with ideas and themes that reflect the needs of commercial brands either now or in the near future. We also love photographers who get your heart racing! When you see their work you think ‘OMG! that is good!’ In this extremely competitive market we know that curation is key and this begins with our artists.
Who is in charge for the photo editing at Gallery Stock and what’s his/her background?
As part Great Bowery, we have a team of experienced Photo Editors and Art Directors. Our US and UK Creative Directors have a wealth of experience from agencies, libraries and production companies. We’re all driven by the same quest for relevant, fresh content.
What type of buyers are your most loyal ones?
As a smaller agency our sales team have the luxury of hands-on, personal relationships with their clients. Our corporate, advertising, publishing and freelance clients know that our team becomes an extension of their creative team when looking for their next images. Our corporate clients rely on us to build out their brand libraries on an on-going basis and to go the extra mile to get them what they need. Our freelance clients know wherever they are, they can log in and we’ll be on hand to work with their new client. We love our freelance clients.
What’s your next goal?
We do have one really exciting new product, but we can’t talk about that just yet.
Broadly speaking, we’re looking at emerging artists and growing our content to meet the needs of new companies with high-volume digital content. It’s a rapidly-changing market and we’re excited to be moving with it.
